City Prosper—a city of cobblestone streets and clouds that hover low, aiding those who wish not to be seen. Lily Emerson, the daughter to both the Head of Council and Mistress of Science, had lived a privileged life. One of tutelage in the many areas of Science. Studies in preparation of following in her mother's footsteps, becoming the next Mistress during the coronation on her eighteenth nameday. Only . . . Lily was always too curious, and in Prosper—curiosity can get you killed.
Plagued with childhood episodes—fainting spells—and a desire to see what’s beyond the walls of the City, Lily started to be looked upon as different. And according to the Law of Prosper, being classified as an Abnormal meant death, or even worse—exile.
Encouraged by her mother to acquire the demure nature of a proper Initiate Mistress, Lily loses herself and becomes the vapid doll she never wanted to be. However, like spilled blood traversing through the cracks in stone, the corruption of the Council spreads before her: starving citizens killed for stealing food . . . a boy who chose to live his life as a girl, seized and imprisoned—gives rise to a side of Lily she never knew she had.
In a rash and heated moment during her coronation, Lily’s resistance shatters, returning her true spitfire nature. Lily abandons the pampered life she was supposed to lead and renounces her title, knowing the title of Mistress only comes with superficial power—that to truly change the lives of the citizens, she has to fight.
Fight in the Barrage.
The Barrage
Every thirteen years, a tournament is held. A mechanical gladiatorial tournament in which one chosen pair from each Sector fights, armor-clad and as a team, utilizing unique weapon specialties—the Gatling gun, the Cestus, Klaives, Crescent Knives, mechanically engineered beasts—in the hope to win the right to change the Law. A law that has remained unchanged since its creation almost eighty years ago.
Though clever and able to design her own armor and weapons, Lily physically isn't a fighter, (yet), and soon realizes her decision to join the Barrage was nothing short of suicidal. She needs all the training she can get and soon finds help after meeting her partner, the impossible shadow—Xander, a Blacksmith Engineer and fighter who knew of the deception within City Prosper long before even she. A deception so immense that it eventually destroys the foundation of everything Lily has known about her home, and herself.
The fates of the citizens depend upon Lily and Xander’s improbable partnership. A partnership rife with secrets and hidden agendas. A partnership that develops into something neither of them expected nor wanted. But even more importantly, the fates of Prosper depend upon Lily Emerson—the Lotus that soars above the corruption that plagues within.
Readers may also relate to Lily’s development into a strong female heroine to the works of Alison Goodman’s Eona and Lauren Oliver’s Pandemonium.
