Reviews:
"Enthusiasts of Divergent or The Hunger Games looking for a book in similar tone, would probably enjoy reading Ladd's Steampunk novel. The strength of Ladd's writing glimmers in its turbo-charged climax and the mystery that she resolves with satisfying precision. Lily Emerson is a strong character whom girls would aspire to be."

"Bridget Ladd brings a fresh voice and a fun perspective to this genre, creating a strong character in her heroine, Lily . . . a character who has stayed in my imagination long after I read the book! Dynamic world-building, elegant writing, and action to leave you breathless. THE LOTUS EFFECT has it all!"
-- Anne Elisabeth Stengl, author of the award-winning Tales of Goldstone Wood.
"I really loved it. Ladd's writing style is gritty without coming across as too somber and hopeless which is one of the main flaws in books of a similar nature. Lily Emerson is a great character . . . she possesses a strength of character, individuality, and ingenuity that should add her to the ranks of the other heroines of fantasy literature."

Lily Emerson, daughter of the Head of Council and Mistress of Science, has lived a privileged life. It’s Lily’s 18th nameday, the day she is to follow in her mother’s footsteps, becoming the next Mistress of Science—the most powerful woman in all of City Prosper. The Architect and designer of Prosper’s future.
During the night of her Coronation, the corruption of the Council spreads before her . . . opening her eyes to the cruelty that resides in the Council, even within her own parents. Lily realizes now the title of Mistress only comes with superficial power, and to truly save the citizens--she has to fight.
Fight in the Barrage—the mechanical gladiatorial tournament in which one chosen pair of volunteers from each Sector fights, armor-clad and as a team, utilizing unique weapon specialties: the Gatling gun, the Cestus, Klaives, Crescent Knives, mechanically engineered beasts—in the hope to win the right to change the Law. A law that has remained unchanged since its creation almost eighty years ago.
The tournament that Xander, Engineering Blacksmith and Lily’s partner, believes she has no business being in.
But Lily’s different. And she sets out to prove just that.

~ Meet Lily ~ Initiate Mistress of Science
The soft glow of the candlelight illuminated the planes of my face, the shadows again dancing upon my cheeks. I regarded the girl before me with an open coolness. The naive Lily Emerson, the daughter of the Head was now gone, replaced with someone whom I could better respect.
I was Lily Emerson. The fighter.
Reaching up, I trailed my finger along the line of the wound that carved over my eye and down my cheek. The same side of my face that was swollen and with an eyelid that was nearly black in color.
My eye would heal, but Xander was right. There would be a scar.
No—I would not pity myself. I would use this as a sign, a symbol of mercy to remind myself of the person that I am, and not who they want me to be. I could’ve killed Bubbles McGee today, but I didn’t. And for that brief moment of hesitation, I am grateful.
I locked eyes with the savage stranger in the mirror again.
I liked what I saw.

~ Meet Xander ~ Engineer Blacksmith, An Impossible Shadow
Most people have a singular color—blue, gray, yellow . . . . One look at the shades of each and I know. I know exactly what drives them. What they’ll do. When they’ll act.
When I look at her—she’s radiant, her emotions all very clear. But there are moments . . . moments when all I sense is the absence of color.
A vessel of pure emptiness.
Then without warning: All colors. Swirling within her becomes a maelstrom of vibrance. Of violence.
Is this erratic storm of energy her own? Her compassion? Her anguish? Her passion to fix what others have broken?
My Sense allows me to know many things.
What I do know is this: I fear for her.
A fear for what she’s capable of. A fear for the regret she may one day face.
